With Liberty and Dividends for All: How to Save Our Middle Class When Jobs Don't Pay Enough

By Peter Barnes

Categories: Business & Money, Politics & Social Sciences

Entrepreneur Peter Barnes argues that globalization, automation and an economy whose gains flow to a few will leave too few high-paying jobs to sustain the American middle class, which therefore needs a supplementary source of nonlabor income. He proposes giving every American a share of wealth held in common, starting with the air and the financial infrastructure, that would pay dividends of several thousand dollars a year. Barnes points to Alaska's Permanent Fund, which pays equal annual dividends to residents, as a working model.
