Zoo Station (2007) is David Downing's first John Russell novel, an espionage story set in Berlin as war closes in. In 1939, Anglo-American journalist John Russell lives in the city with a German girlfriend and a young son from his marriage to his estranged wife Ilse. Recruited by Soviet intelligence and pressed by the British, he must play the sides against each other to protect the people he loves while the Gestapo tightens its grip.
