Ain't I a Woman?
Categories: Politics & Social Sciences
Sojourner Truth, born into slavery in New York around 1797, grew into a commanding voice of the abolition and women's rights movements, and this short Penguin Great Ideas volume gathers her speeches. Its centerpiece is her 1851 address to the women's rights convention in Akron, Ohio, remembered by its refrain, "Ain't I a woman?" The selection sets her words beside writing by other nineteenth-century African American women campaigners, showing how they joined the fights against slavery and for equal rights.
