Bad Monkeys

Categories: Literature & Fiction

Jane Charlotte has been arrested for murder in Las Vegas. Held in the jail's psychiatric wing, she tells a doctor that she belongs to a secret organization devoted to fighting evil, working for a division officially called the Department for the Final Disposition of Irredeemable Persons, or Bad Monkeys for short. Matt Ruff's 2007 novel unfolds through her interrogation as the doctor tries to judge whether she is lying, delusional or playing a different game. Ruff has called it his Philip K. Dick novel.

• Seth Godin: “Matt Ruff writes fun, compelling novels, and this one is far and away his best. It's a little bit of Fight Club, but told in a fascinating locked room interview style. Worth a think (or three).”
