Max Barry's 2003 satirical novel imagines a world where corporations dominate, taxes have been abolished and employees take their employer's name as their surname. A shrunken government survives, but it can act only when someone pays for its help. When Hack Nike, a lowly merchandising officer, agrees to a scheme to kill customers in order to build buzz for a new line of sneakers, he attracts the notice of Jennifer Government, a single mother and agent who must raise funds before she can fight crime.
