Cory Doctorow's 2009 novel follows Perry and Lester, two hardware hackers who rebuild discarded devices and 3D-print new ones to sell. Journalist Suzanne Church, sent by a corporate backer to chronicle them, watches their tinkering grow into a movement called the New Work. After the boom turns to bust, the pair open a homemade ride in an abandoned Walmart, and their success soon draws the attention of a much larger rival, Disney.

- Seth Godin: “Cory's back, and this sprawling, compelling science fiction romp is even more than you might expect. He is a worthy successor to Robert Heinlein, and when I read his ideas about bottom up innovation, crowdsourcing and the new economy, they have even more power in fiction than they do in the stuff I often read. I cried a little at the end.”
